Project Health Management

It is extremely important to keep monitoring the health of the project to be able to drive it successfully towards completion aligned to the expected outcomes as per the baseline plan. Much similar to the Plan Do Check Act cycle where checking is done to see if the project shape is as per the desired picture after the Plan and Do phases, it is important to check the health of the project even across phases. For example: it is important to see if the planning is being done as per the plan, which means the planning phase health.

We use a combination of various diagnostic tools and techniques to measure the health of the project across phases and suggest corrective and proactive measures. Some of the representative techniques are: heuristic, scientific, empirical and expert judgment etc. We design a set of health points/symptoms that need to be captured and analyze them from the current and future trends across triple constraint (Cost/Resources, Time/Schedule and Scope/Quality) to arrive at the probability of completion of the project within the triple constraint.

While we have a list of symptoms and health check points that we use to measure overall health out of our experience and our enormous archives of best practices and lessons learnt, we use situational and contextual fluency to design our health points accordingly. Sometimes even experts fail in assessing the health because they are using the ‘one size fits all’ approach. It is important to customize the health check by aligning it to the business requirements and management objectives etc.

Those COEs work like labs where there is a constant churn through brainstorming of the experience, best practices, lessons learnt, latest in the field etc. is done.
